Honolulu Rose Society
November 12th, 2009 by Paula BenderRoses were in bloom at Kahala Mall Center last weekend. We Benders visited the mall for a Starbucks fix, a visit to the apple store, and were treated to a delightful display of roses courtesy of the Honolulu Rose Society.
In a state more known for such flora as bird of paradise, plumeria and hibiscus, who knew there would be such a following for roses? Cochairwoman Jean Young invited us to stop and smell the roses, which we did. She then provided us with ballots to vote for the one we felt smelled the sweetest. I chose a big, lavender species that had a spicy enticing smell -- #6. My husband chose #8 and Charlotte chose #11. These roses that were in competition were of every color, size and shape. Each had its own individual scent. Just goes to show the scent of a rose is not the scent of a rose is not the scent of a rose.
There is always something going on at Kahala Mall Center, or as I often refer to it, @KahalaMallCtr. It's a big draw for seniors who like to power walk before the stores even open. Often there is home-grown entertainment, even big iTunes names such as Anuhea. The tables and chairs are inviting, there's free WiFi, and when you live in East Oahu, you can bet you will always run into a friend.
I took a photo of Jean with the roses, and later I'll post it here. Mahalo to the Honolulu Rose Society for making our world a little more beautiful and sweeter. It certainly underscores what Hawaii is all about.
